Why sort bio-waste
From January 1, 2024, separate collection of bio-waste is mandatory everywhere in Estonia . This means that bio-waste must now either be handed over at the point of origin or properly composted at home.
By collecting waste, including bio-waste separately, it becomes possible to recycle it on a larger scale. Separately collected bio-waste is mostly made into compost in Estonia, which allows substances taken from nature to return to the soil. The coming years will also see an increase in the production of biogas, which is used as car fuel, to heat houses and to generate electricity.
Once placed in household waste, bio-waste can no longer be sorted out. When deposited in a landfill, bio-waste causes the generation of landfill gas, which is a significant greenhouse gas. Furthermore, we are letting such a valuable resource go to waste. It also makes it difficult to recycle other household waste, as bio-waste pollutes other material when collected together. To avoid this, bio-waste must be collected separately at the point of origin.
